There’s so much to consider when homeschooling. One of the biggies is the budget. If you are a single homeschooling parent like me, you are most likely looking for a kid-friendly and inexpensive curriculum. Over the past twelve years, we’ve come across a few free homeschooling options that are worth sharing.
Ambleside Online is a free homeschool curriculum that uses Charlotte Mason’s classically-based principles to prepare children for a life of rich relationships with everything around them: God, humanity, and the natural world. AO’s detailed schedules, time-tested methods, and extensive teacher resources allow parents to focus effectively on the unique needs of each child.
Mater Amablilis is a free Charlot Mason style curriculum for Catholics. The authors are a British mother of three, Dr. Kathryn Faulkner and an American mother of ten, Michele Quigley. “Master Amabilis seeks to use the best books/materials available when possible. Some of the book suggestions are available as e-texts online but most are not. Most of the books can be obtained through online booksellers, Catholic vendors, and local libraries.”
Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschooling has preschool through eighth grade. “Grade levels include all of the English, math, computer, and logic. The other subjects are combined into “program years” so that all of your children can study the same topic at the same time. Year 1’s theme is ancient history and biology. Year 2 has early American history and zoology for the theme. Year 3 is earth science and geography and cultures as the theme. Year 4’s theme is modern history, physics, and chemistry.”
Easy Peasy All-in-One Highschool is the extension to All-in-One Homeschooling. The high school site is set up similar to the lower school, except that there are no levels. You choose your course load.
An Old-Fashioned Education is a Christian site similar to Ambleside Online, but more structured, using a combination of textbooks and living books.
