A clown style red nose is the symbol of Red Nose Day, which is a massive fundraising event held by Comic Relief every two years and this year it returns on May 25th.
Comic Relief was started by comedians who wanted to use comedy and laughter to let people know about poverty in the UK and Africa. It was launched in 1985, from a refugee camp in Sudan.
The very first Red Nose Day was held in 1988, with millions of people participating in its first year. Check out some of the highlights of Comic Relief’s history timeline.
Red Nose Day has raised over $1 billion globally, and since 2015, over $60 million has been raised in America
The Red Nose Day Fund provides grants to charities who are doing work in the US and overseas to help end child poverty. Walgreens, Comic Relief Inc., and their charitable partners are providing:
- Meals to feed hungry kids in America
- Safe places to live for homeless children
- Essential medical services for children
- Life-saving vaccines and treatments for children
Get involved on Red Nose Day!
Here are some ways you can have an impact on child poverty:
Ride On for Red Nose Day
Ride On for Red Nose Day is a four-day 400-mile ride to end childhood poverty. Ride one will go from Santa Barbara, CA to Las Vegas Nevada April 30 – May 3. Ride two will go from Boston, MA to New York, NY May 21 – 24.
But you don’t have to ride 400 miles to get involved. Organize your own ride with children from your neighborhood or school. And don’t forget to wear your red noses 🙂
